Fishnets and School Uniforms
As I alighted from one bus this morning, on my way to another, I noticed a schoolgirl walking ahead of me. Nothing particularly unusual about that, except that under her standard issue, hideously unflattering tartan pleated below the knee skirt, she was wearing faux-fishnet pop socks.
Not faux-fishnet tights.
Not ordinary knee-high socks.
Pop socks.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not exactly in line to be the next Trinny or Susannah, but even I know that below the age of 40, pop socks are just wrong.
Especially if they're on view.
They're only marginally acceptable when wearing trousers, and only then if you're not planning to get naked in company any time soon (those elastic band marks under the knee are just such a dead give-away).
I only just managed not to take her to one side and explain that it's all or nothing when it comes to nylon.
Half measures just don't do it.

And on a practical note, what is the point of fishnet pop socks?

So, let's get this straight, you explained to a schoolgirl in the street that she should only wear them when she's not planning to get naked in company any time soon.
That really is "What Not To Wear".

I'm rather surprised her parents let her out of the house in that outfit, but compared to some I see here, I'm not in the least bit surprised. Those kind of socks are *required* for many school uniforms here....

I saw this look is some terrible fashion supplement in the Guardian. Clearly young school girly has yet to realise the fashion pages are for frowning at in "and how good would that look on Clapham High Street on a weekday?" way rather than actual practical guidance.
In fairness, the Guardian attempted to redeem it by explaining that men don't understand patterned tights at all: http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1141496,00.html
